Continuing our global journey to learn something new, our next stop is Toronto, the largest city in Canada and the 4th largest city in North America. The architectural icon of the city is the CN Tower which until 2007 held the world record as the tallest free-standing structure on the planet. The new king of the architectural hill is now the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
More than 50% of current Torontonians were born elsewhere with its citizens representing over 200 distinct ethnic origins. There are roughly 180 languages and dialects spoken in Toronto and 44% of residents have a first language that is not English or French.
Did not know that the famous USA baseball player Babe Ruth hit his first professional home run in Toronto in 1914 when he was a 19-year-old rookie for the minor league Providence Grays. Amazingly, Toronto is home to 10 million trees with the oldest being a 300-year-old oak in North York. Yonge Street in the city is the longest in the world at 1,896 km (1,178 miles).
From visiting multiple cities in Canada, I can confirm that hockey is a religion. This picture was taken at a Retail Council of Canada event where I had the pleasure of delivering my “Disruptive Future of Retail” keynote presentation. The hockey jersey was a gift from my great Canadian friend Robert Simoneau.
