Continuing our journey to learn something new and begin the New Year as a superhero, we learn some fun facts about Spider-Man. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, he first appeared in August 1962.
Stan Lee actually wanted to base the comic on a fly or insect, but then settled on a spider. He got the idea for the superhero as he watched a fly crawling on the wall and wondered whether a person had the power to stick to a wall like an insect. Names considered for the character were Mosquito-Man, Insect-Man, but thinking through all the wall-crawling bugs they reached Spider-Man which he thought sounded mysterious and dramatic.
Publisher Martin Goldman initially rejected the idea of Spider-Man, reasoning that people hate spiders. He also at first rejected the idea of Spidey being a teenager, as only sidekicks were teens.
Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, was born in Forest Hills, New York. His parent, who were spies, were killed in a plane crash, and Peter went to live with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben.
